WINTER Seasonal Home Checklist
There are some things in life we never think about until it's too late. Consider using this season to update some behind-the-scenes items that will keep your home running smoothly and safely.
1. FIRE EXTINGUISHER Every homeowner should keep a fire extinguisher on hand. These should be checked each year for pressurization and any signs of wear and tear. They should also be replaced every so often to ensure maximum effectiveness in case of emergency.
2. SMOKE AND CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS Properly working smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors can be the difference between life and death. Ensure yours are powered and operational and placed within proper distance of bedrooms and other required living spaces.
3. TURN YOUR FURNACE ON Colorado winters can be fickle. It's possible to leave for the holidays on a sunny 70 degree day, only to come home a week later to freezing temperatures. Be sure to keep your furnace on when you leave town and consider leaving cabinet doors under your sinks open to allow the warm air to properly circulate. If not, your pipes can freeze and burst, flooding your home.
4. SEWER LINE Sewer lines transport the waste from your home out to the main city line. These lines can occasionally get clogged from foreign materials getting flushed (like wet wipes) or suffer from tree root intrusion that blocks proper waste disposal. A line cleaning every few years by a qualified plumber will keep the line running smoothly and avoid costly - and NASTY - back ups.
5. FURNACE FILTER Replace your furnace filter. A clean filter is essential to keeping your home cooled or heated consistently and affordably. It's also an easy way to maximize the lifespan of your furnace or air conditioning unit. These should be replaced no less than every 90 days.
Follow these tips to ensure your home stays in tip top shape year round.
